Buffering, quality drops, and slow stream starts are frustrating — but in most cases they're fixable without upgrading your internet plan. These five tips address the most common causes of poor streaming performance and work across all devices and services.
Wi-Fi is convenient, but it introduces variability that streaming punishes. Signal interference from neighbours' networks, thick walls, distance from the router, and microwave ovens all reduce effective throughput below what your internet plan delivers. A wired Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cable from your router to your streaming device eliminates all of this variability.
If your Smart TV has an Ethernet port (most premium TVs do), use it. For streaming sticks and boxes without Ethernet, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter provides a wired connection. Even a 10-metre Ethernet cable is more reliable for streaming than Wi-Fi at 2 metres.
If wired isn't an option, connect your streaming device to your router's 5 GHz band rather than 2.4 GHz. The 5 GHz band supports significantly higher speeds (theoretically up to 1,300 Mbps on Wi-Fi 5 versus 600 Mbps on 2.4 GHz) and is far less congested because fewer devices use it and its shorter wavelength penetrates through neighbouring networks less.
In your streaming device's Wi-Fi settings, look for network names ending in '_5G' or '_5GHz'. If your router broadcasts a combined network, check your router's admin panel to see both bands separately. Devices within 10 metres with line-of-sight to the router benefit most from 5 GHz.
Other apps using your internet connection compete for the bandwidth your streaming needs. Large app updates, cloud backups, game downloads, and other streaming services all share the same pipe. Before starting a long stream, pause or complete any active downloads on all devices on your network — not just the streaming device.
On smart TVs and Android TV boxes, some apps run background processes that consume bandwidth even when not in use. Check your device's network usage settings and close apps you're not using. On Windows and Mac, pause cloud sync services (OneDrive, iCloud, Google Drive) during streaming sessions.
Consumer routers accumulate memory leaks and stale routing tables over time, gradually degrading performance. A monthly restart clears this state and refreshes the router's connection to your ISP. Unplug your router from power for 30 seconds rather than using the restart button — this ensures capacitors fully discharge and the firmware loads fresh.
If restarting your router consistently improves streaming quality, consider setting a weekly scheduled restart using your router's admin panel (available on most models). This keeps performance consistently high without manual intervention.
Adaptive bitrate streaming is designed to maintain smooth playback by reducing quality when needed — but on a consistently fast connection (25 Mbps or more), quality can briefly dip during transitions even when your full speed is available. Setting a fixed quality in the streaming app removes this behaviour.
In the Ultra 8K app settings, go to Video Quality and select 'Ultra HD' instead of 'Automatic'. This locks the stream to the highest available quality. If your connection reliably delivers 25+ Mbps, you'll get consistent Ultra HD without any adaptive quality steps.
Most streaming quality problems come down to connection stability rather than speed. A 25 Mbps wired Ethernet connection almost always outperforms 100 Mbps Wi-Fi for streaming reliability. Start with the wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi switch, close competing downloads, and restart your router — in most cases those three steps alone are transformative.
Speed is not the same as stability. Even a 200 Mbps Wi-Fi connection buffers if it has high packet loss or inconsistent latency. A 25 Mbps wired Ethernet connection is more reliable for streaming than 200 Mbps Wi-Fi with interference.
